theatre nomad brings
together theatre makers from around the world
working in a variety of theatrical traditions to
reinterpret classic texts and create new theatre for
new audiences and new situations. The company tours
the globe - from South Wales to Siberia, Canada to
the Cape of Africa, China to the islands of the
Indian Ocean. |

Thousands of people have taken part in theatre
nomad's educational workshops run as part of the
company's commitment to the exploration of
performance and the social use of drama. The company
has run workshops on Shakespeare in the townships of
South Africa, on trance performance in England, on
the acting of gender in North America and on text
and theatre skills in schools and colleges across
Europe. The nomads have also used drama to deal with
a wide range of social issues including war and
bereavement in Kosovo, youth alienation in North
America and conflict reconciliation in Southern
Africa. |

|
The company has performed in
the Shakespeare Gardens in Paris, high up in the
Bavarian Alps, in a ruined church as part of the
International Shakespeare Festival in Gdansk, at The
Hong Kong City Festival and across South Africa.
Productions have been seen by more than 40,000
people in more than 140 different venues in 10
countries with associated workshops given for a
further 7,000 participants |

theatre nomad
has created three individual but
thematically linked pieces from our
exploration of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer
Night’s Dream. One celebrates summer, one
sees the world through the eyes of the
Tokolshe, the African Puck, and one distils
the play itself into an evening of drama and
dance. Each piece can be seen on its own or
in combination with the others. |

SUMMER
A theatrical picnic in which the
audience is invited to enjoy the
sights, sounds, smells and tastes of
a perfect summer’s day as the
performance happens amongst and
around them.
The piece is performed in any clear
indoor space with a good sound
system. The audience sit or lie on
the floor as the production unfolds.
Devised and performed by Alexis
Bradburn, Sean Damien Bruno, Robert

NIGHT
The Tokoloshe is the Puck of
southern African folklore; a
creature that comes after dark to
cause mischief and mayhem. A friend
to children but a danger to adults,
the Tokoloshe will jump into your
bed at night if you are not careful.
With both male and female sexual
organs, no one is safe.
The production is best seen in the
open air around a camp fire or in a
darkened studio.

DREAM
‘Now it is the time of night
That the graves, all gaping wide,
Every one lets forth his sprite,
In the church-way paths to glide.
And we fairies, that do run
By the triple Hecate’s team
From the presence of the sun,
Following darkness like a dream,
Now are frolic!’
Dance, movement and physicality come
together with Shakespeare’s poetry
to create an hour of darkness in
which love is turned on its head and
sexual desire causes mischief and
surprise. theatre nomad’s reworking
of Shakespeare’s play translates the
audience to a very dark fairy
kingdom indeed.
The production is adaptable to any
theatre space, indoors or out.
