The Beaufort Scale - London October 2005 |
As part of our on-going exploration of the telling of tales, a small
group of nomads have spent time in Deal, on England’s south coast,
collecting stories of the sea. In an old church hall, the performers
created an installation in which the stories were retold. It was a
ghostly evening of candles and fairylights, tombstones and
shipwrecks. Tea, once the most precious of commodities for which
ships were lured onto their treacherous Deal sands, was brewed for
the audience and handed out by the hovellers, the beach dwellers who
for centuries made a living from the shipwrecks. The performers were
Kitty Myers, Victoria Gillmon, Paul Huntley-Thomas, Matt Spray and
Lisa Payne.

Faraway Nearby workshops continued
with an intensive week at London’s People Show Studios led by Luke
Dixon and Jane Turner. Methodologies, styles and stories were
explored and the ensemble developed. The week ended with a
Fellini-esque sharing for friends.
