Review of In The Beginning

East Kent Mercury

A new theatre in Dover was the venue for a specially created performance by theatre nomad on Friday. In the beginning was an improvised piece based on creation myths from around the globe. The storytelling was lively and amusing. It took place in a simple setting of earth colours which cleverly incorporated elements of fire water and air. It featured young people from Dover, actors from theatre nomad and West African musician Bajaly Suzo who worked alongside the company during a packed week of workshops and rehearsal. Directed by Luke Dixon, the performance was the result of a collaboration between theatre nomad and Creative Partnerships Kent which is providing Dover students with the opportunity to learn all aspects of theatre management and performance in the amphitheatre in Dover Discovery Centre. The theatre has been named Dover Roundhouse by the students who have been working there with a team of theatre makers from theatre nomad since January. In October the team will be working on a production of Shakespeare's Pericles and hosting a performance by the ariel performance company Expressive Feat. Both events will be part of the Canterbury Festival.
